Work and Health

One thing about being an adult, and a child at school, is that work is a normal part of life. So few of us enjoy it, and those that don't tend to suffer effects to their physical and mental health because of it.

Work is a normal part of life, and something everyone has to do. A lucky handful of us get to do their dream job, but this is not always the case. More often than not, it is the exact opposite. This can even start from childhood and studies at school. In fact, it frequently does start there.

I am someone that enjoyed the studious part of school life very very much. I liked learning new things, and being able to use that knowledge anywhere I could. Except for math. I'm awful at math.

But many of the students that were in class with me, did not feel that same way. And everyday I could see how tired they were, and how depressed they were getting because of the strain the work, and their parents, put on them. Succeeding in school is always important, but depending on the way you think and learn, it can be a punishment. As a teacher I had many students who did not like school, and I went out of my way to cater the lessons to each of their needs. This was relatively easy to do, as I worked in a private school that did not have many students. And because I did this, students that scored well below average on tests, suddenly became top scorers. All because of an adjusted lesson plan.

Unfortunately, while this works very well with children and trying to get their grades up, this is not always the case when it comes to being an adult and having to do the work that you are able to get. Because most of the time the work you get, may not be the work you want. And your bosses is also a very big factor in your work life. Because if you have a crappy boss (or teacher for children, then everything is made a whole lot harder to deal with.

I personally had several bosses that were nightmares to work with. Nothing I said or did was right. I was constantly treated badly, and insulted in front of customers. I was paid well below minimum wage for an 11 hour work day, and my bosses made every single second a nightmare. Even when I started dong work for them that I was not actually hired to do. There was even a point in time where I could not have a lunch break, and I was not allowed to go to the bathroom. This had a great adverse effect on my health.

The downside of being in those situations is that your mental and physical health starts to suffer badly. In my experience at school, I saw the children that were stressed withdraw into themselves, lash out at their friends, and completely isolate themselves because they did not know how to deal with it. Thereafter I noticed a marked difference in their physical health. Some would lose a lot of weight suddenly, or some would gain weight suddenly. I even noticed some of them start to self harm because of it.

In the case of my work life, I started drawing into myself because of my work environment. I didn't want to eat, and started losing weight. I started to feel very depressed and withdrew from my family even more than I already was. My temper became shorter, and I snapped at everyone when they did the slightest thing to annoy me. This went on until I quit the jobs in question.

After that, it took quite a while for me to find balance on a mental and physical sense. I slowly started eating more and healthier, and I started feeling a lot better on a mental scale. Of course, I had my best friend at my side who supported me through it all, and it helped so much. Without her help and support I could not have regained my balance as quickly as I did.

In cases where you are stuck and cannot get out of the situation by walking away for a variety of reasons, it is a lot harder to find your balance again. In fact, it can be nearly impossible without help and support.

If you are stuck in a situation like that, reach out to those close to you. Share the problems that are weighing on your mind. This can only help. They can support you where needed, and they may be able to give you advice for certain situations.
