Depression in the World Today

Writer's picture: Reanné SlabberReanné Slabber

For a very long time, depression has been something that has not been fully acknowledged, due to the fact that everyone reacts differently to it, and most people don't recognize it as a valid mental disease.

While it has gotten a lot more attention and understanding over the last 50 years, it is still a very sensitive subject to many people.

Depression is a subject that many people do not want to acknowledge, or that people completely overlook, in those suffering from it. Unfortunately, this happens quite often to teenagers, as many people are of the opinion that they have no reason to be depressed.

But here's the problem: no one can say what you do or do not have the right to feel. Even though many people think they have the right to do exactly that.

My own experience with depression started at a young age, developed slowly, and then blew up exponentially. To the point that I very nearly lost the most important person in my life because of my actions at that time.

Depression can present in many ways, but the most commonly shared feeling is one of numbness. Of being in a void where no one can reach you. Where there is nothing keeping you anchored. You are floating in darkness with no air, no light, and most importantly, no reason for existing.

It is due to the intensity of such feelings, and the common perception of it, that many people say teenagers can't feel it. Because what reason do they have for feeling that way?

There are many reasons for being depressed. Many stem from sources such as home life, school bullies, the feeling of being alone, and not being able to rely on anyone to ask for help and support with what it is that you are struggling with.

Depression affects everything. It affects how you feel in every situation. You cannot summon up enough energy to react with any emotion to a situation. You are exhausted, and you either sleep constantly, or you cant sleep at all. Some people cry themselves to sleep and have emotional breakdowns when no one is there to see. You can't eat, because you don't have energy or desire to do so. You feel lost and hopeless and numb day in and day out. You fake happiness to such a point that people truly believe it, because it is better than dealing with their judgements and their constant remarks.

There is no instant cure for depression. It is a long and arduous journey to get to the point where you can start to breathe a bit. Where the numbness disappears bit by bit. But it is possible.

The most important thing to remember is the fact that you truly are not alone. I know that it sounds empty, meaningless, and repetitive, but it is the truth.

In many cases people are unable to ask for help, don't have access to support, or do not have access to medication. This means that many cases of depression, regardless of age, goes both unseen and undiagnosed until it is too late.

Often depression leads to self harm, followed by suicide. Those suffering from it who are unable to get help, have to deal with it all alone. In these cases it keeps building, and they start to look for an outlet. This is self harm. And once that doesn't give the relief they need anymore, it starts to build again, until the worst happens. At this point many people will say that they never knew because the person seemed so happy. But it is easy to fake happiness to keep people, and their judgements, at bay.

Finding support is very difficult, but there are a variety of options for those who do not have help immediately available. Support groups are extremely helpful in a variety of ways. They help with various kinds of depression, and provide support in any way necessary to those that need it. I have added a link below to Destroy Depression. They have a variety of resources to aid in your situation.

Mental health is the most important thing to think of. When forced into a situation where you do not know what to do, where you are torn between your own desires and that of the person/people putting you in the situation, THINK OF YOUR OWN MENTAL HEALTH FIRST!

Do what is best for you. It may make people mad, and it may be easier to just give in, but start to think of yourself. Making everyone around you happy at the expense of your own mental health is the worst thing you can do. I know it is easier said than done, but its the best place to start.

You matter. Your happiness matters. Do not forget that. Nor everyone can see your worth, but you are not worthless. Think of yourself for a change, and don't look back. That is the first baby step. Say no when you don't want to do something, and stick to it. Wear blue instead of the red you are told to wear. Start by doing tiny little things that make you happy, and build up from there.

You will get through this.
